News broke yesterday that the nation of Haiti was hit by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake that is now linked to possibly 100,000 deaths. CNN has an ongoing update feed and the latest was that Port-au-Prince has been ruled destroyed. I visited Haiti just over a year and half ago and stayed outside of Port-au-Prince. Driving through Port-au-Prince was a culture shock in itself. Millions of people tightly compacted into a small city surrounded by buildings with no roofs and the sense of hopelessness that was evident in the people’s eyes. The look on the children’s face will never leave me. I got to see firsthand how unstable Nation of Haiti was in my 10 day visit, The poorest place on earth with no structure of a working Government. I often wondered how such turmoil could happen to so many people. Yesterday when I heard the news names started popping in my head. I have never been a worry some person but yesterday was the first time in a long time I had to purposively deflect my thoughts so I could sleep. I kept thinking about how the nation would react at night to the panic and horror of the events of the evening. How already an unstable place could survive such a tragic event. I don’ know. I have no answers. All I know is that Gods love is for all it’s what compels us to breathe and live. That is the love that gives hope. See the country with no hope is actually hope. I pray I will never forget again what Haiti means to me. Hope.
